Transformation
This built-in antique cupboard runs the entire length of the kitchen. It was one of several things that made me fall in love with the place. But I never liked the wood finish on it. In photos it looks pretty good, but in real life it was kind of nasty. The bottom doors are different woods and looked like bad teeth because the colors vary from brown to gray- brown.
There are people who are horrified at the idea of ever painting over wood, but I believe some woods aren’t meant to be left exposed, such as door and window trim made of pine, and built-in pine pieces like this one. I had been looking forward to having it painted as part of the renovation.

Last week a team of painters came in and got to work. The first thing they did was number each door so they can put them back correctly.

Then they removed the 18 doors — eight glass, on top, and ten solid wood ones from the bottom.

Just priming everything took a day and a half.

Meanwhile, I took the 18 latches, six drawer handles, and 36 hinges to Baltimore Metal Crafters to be stripped down and finished in satin nickel.

The doors have been spending the weekend in the hallway with the fan blowing on them — it’s so hot and humid in Baltimore right now that they need extra help to fully dry.

I had the insides painted yellow-green and I’m very happy with how it looks. Next I’m adding a punch of color. Can you guess what it will be?
