Surprise Yourself
The first time I installed a hardwired light, I was so proud of myself. I was also really surprised at how easy it actually was to do. If you’re not familiar with the term, a hardwired light fixture is one that does not have a cord and a plug, but rather is connected directly to the electrical wires inside your wall or ceiling.
I had always thought it was a project that was beyond my abilities and should be left to a professional. And it is true that installing a light fixture requires a great deal of RESPECT for the danger of live electrical wires. Having said that, replacing an existing fixture is a pretty uncomplicated procedure and directions for doing it are easy to find (I especially like this one because the hands in the photos are lady hands).
Changing a light fixture can make a big difference in the look of a room, both in terms of the fixture itself as a decorative object and the way its light enhances the mood and functionality of the space. And if you’re renting, it can mean a total upgrade for not much investment.
Since I’m in NY for a couple of days, I thought I would show you one of the lights I installed here. I replaced the standard single bulb light with Ikea’s three spotlight Basisk light to create a little gallery in the darkish entrance hall. When I move from here, I can easily remove it (I saved the old one) and take it with me. But at $24.99, it was cheap enough that I’ll probably leave it for the next tenant to enjoy.
