househuntinginparis asked: I've never been thrifting in NYC. Any favorite thrift or consignment stores to recommend in Manhattan? Any type of lowbrow auction houses similar to the ones here in France? Thanks!
I have to say that my thrift shopping experiences in Manhattan have been pretty dismal. There’s just too much competition, too much likelihood that someone else — who likes what you like — has been there before you. Also, the prices of things are ridiculously high. This perception has been confirmed by others who have done plenty of thrift shopping in more, shall I say, “sleepy” areas, and have the same experience in Manhattan.
I’m not an expert on Brooklyn but I do know of several good used furniture stores, one is Time Galleries on 5th Ave. and 16th St. in Park Slope. I imagine Queens has some, too, but I don’t know them.
If anyone has suggestions, I’d love to hear them. But for now, I restrict my thrift shopping to everywhere-but-NY.
